The beginnings of the Banijska šara were in the 19th century, the breed threatened to extinc, however,ten years ago, on the slopes of Zrinska Gora and Šamarica, the last examples were collected and it started to revitalize. Decision on recognition of new original and protected breed under the name of the 'Banijska šara ' is the result of successful work. Population of pigs in the type of Banijska šara was successfully distinguished from other populations, good quality of body and meat of the fatling was established. Through the three observed years the number of individuals and the number of breeders increased. There were 156 fertile sows who had 189 broods. In total, 837 pigs of Banijska šara were rejected. Indeks of the initial farowing was 1.19 in the first year, increased to 1.42 in the last year under observation. The average results of the size of the Banijska šara brood is 8.2 live piglets per fertile sow and 5.2 rejected. There were 4.6 rejected from average 7.2 live piglets. The relatively high losses of piglets (37.6%) were recorded and in the future it has to be reduced. The Banijska šara, along with Black Slavonian pig and Turopoljska pig, has become the third recognized protected breed of pigs in the Republic of Croatia, primarily thanks to the VIP project Revitalization of breeding Banijska šara.
